Marcus specializes in civic and cultural projects, the cathedrals, heritage and arts buildings, justice precincts and civic landmarks that carry a place's identity. An architect by training and a Green Star accredited professional, he works at the front of these projects, aligning the many stakeholders, cultural narratives and layers of governance a significant public build has to carry long before it reaches site.

Much of that was forged rebuilding Christchurch after the earthquakes, where he brought new thinking to the Justice and Emergency Services Precinct, the Arts Centre, two cathedrals and university buildings. He has since led the design on the reinstatement of Christ Church Cathedral, among the most complex heritage projects in the country, and now plays a major role on the New Dunedin Hospital, New Zealand's largest hospital rebuild.

Stakeholders sometimes aren't joined up in their thinking or goals, but you listen and work to align their expectations and delivery outcomes.

He brings Mana Whenua and iwi in early, weaving their cultural narrative and identity into a building from the start, so civic projects carry real meaning for the communities who use them. That work is now visible across Christchurch, and he sees it as a template for how government projects should be done.

Marcus came into the industry through the Keystone Trust, and now gives his time to the young people coming through it. He leads the same way, measuring himself by how well he brings others on.
